How To Use a
Facial Roller

Not all skincare tools are created equal - face rollers really are worth the hype. Here’s why you should include one in your skincare routine and how to use it.

What Is A Face Roller?

Gua shas or facial rollers are tools that are used to scrape, press or massage your skin to stimulate the lymphatic system, blood circulation and a range of physical and mental benefits. They vary in styles from mini rolling pins, dual-ended quartz rollers to the heart-shaped Gua sha. They are typically made from jade, rose quartz or other crystals which are said to have their own added benefits.

The Benefits Of Face Rolling

It would be quicker to list what face rolling doesn’t do. Facial rolling’s ability to stimulate lymphatic drainage not only helps to decrease puffiness but release tension and stress. As well as helping to calm the mind and improve your mood, it can also reduce inflammation and calm your skin too. By stimulating blood flow and encouraging circulation, your skin can also appear brighter and glowing.

How To Use A Gua Sha or Facial Roller?

Using a roller or Gua sha facial tool can also help to distribute your skincare more evenly and encourage the absorption of products. Using an oil or serum will not only coat your skin with nourishing ingredients but help the tool to glide over it without pulling or stretching, which can encourage wrinkles and fine lines to form.

Once you’ve thoroughly cleansed your skin to remove any impurities and daily dirt, apply a facial oil or serum to clean skin. Make sure your roller is clean before starting at your neck and rolling in an upward motion – if you remember one thing, lifting encourages a younger complexion while dragging downwards does the opposite. Roll outwards from the centre of your face too.

Roll from your jawline to your ears, progressing up to your cheekbones, and your forehead up towards your hairline.

Getting the right pressure is important – too little may not stimulate drainage and circulation but too much can contribute to wrinkles. Use a firm pressure that doesn’t cause any discomfort or pain.

For best results, consistency is key. Although your skin may instantly appear brighter from just a few minutes of rolling, committing to 5-10 minutes every day, or at least three to five times a week, will give you the best results.

Popping your roller or Gua sha in the fridge or freezer to cool will also help to instantly reduce swelling and puffiness. It can help to calm skin after skincare treatments such as micro needling or facial peels, too. If you suffer from migraines or have a headache, you may find using a cool roller over your forehead and eyebrows helps to relieve tension and pain.

To trap in the beneficial ingredients of your favourite serum or oil - whether that’s hydrating Hyaluronic Acid or Restorative Botanicals - follow your rolling session with a layer of moisturiser.
