By Kiehl’s Education Team

Whether you are waking up with tired-looking eyes after a late night or notice dark circles every morning, these under-eye shadows are a common skin concern that can affect all skin types and skin tones. We can help you to improve the look of dark circles even if you can't guarantee 8 hours of sleep, but first let's get the lowdown on how and why we even get dark circles.

What are dark circles?

Dark circles are shadows under the eyes which can cause you to look tired or stressed. The skin around the eye is very delicate and is often one of the first places to show signs of ageing. This thin skin can sometimes appear nearly translucent which may cause dark circles to become more visible. Dark circles may become more visible after a restless night of sleep or a stressful week, but they are also caused by other factors which may be out of your control. A family history of dark under-eye area may mean you are predisposed to them. As we age, they can become more visible as the delicate skin under the eyes gets thinner and some lifestyle factors like lack of sleep can make dark circles more visible. While you may not be able to prevent dark circles, there are solutions that can help give you a bright-eyed appearance.

What causes dark circles under eyes?

Dark circles have two main causes pigmentation and poor circulation. Pigmentation is often related to genetics and skin tone, but can also be caused by the sun. A condition called periorbital hyperpigmentation is caused by an increase in the production or distribution of melanin and makes the skin under the eyes look darker. Poor circulation can also cause eyes to appear puffy which may make dark circles seem more prominent. Dilated blood vessels are those that are full of blood and a combination of this and visible blood vessels mean the area will look darker. Dark circles can also be caused by factors in your lifestyle like: stress, excessive drinking, poor diet, excessive salt intake, dehydration and certain medical treatments.

Are dark circles a sign of ageing?

While dark circles are often seen as one of the early signs of ageing, they actually affect a range of ages. While dark circles can happen to all skin types, skin tones and ages, they do often become more visible over time as the under-eye area skin loses volume and density. They are often accompanied by other signs of ageing around the eye including: puffy eyelids crow's feet, fine lines and wrinkles, bags under eyes.

How do you improve the look of dark circles?

If your dark circles are looking particularly advanced, perhaps after a few late nights, use cold compresses in the morning. Simply put a wet flannel in the fridge for 30 mins or overnight and then apply to the eye area in the morning, not only will it help to shrink blood vessels in the area, but it will also calm any puffiness. We also recommend applying an eye cream every morning and every evening, try our Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing & Dark Circle-Diminishing Vitamin C Eye Serum formulated with 10% Pure Vitamin C, Tri-Peptide and Hyaluronic Acid. Avoid straining your eyes by limiting screen time and ensuring you have regular eye tests, and make sure you drink enough water as dehydrated skin can make eye circles look more pronounced.

Does sleep help with dark circles?

Waking up to dark circles and eye puffiness is often a tell-tale sign of a late night. While getting more sleep will not prevent dark circles, especially those related to pigmentation and circulation, it can help the area around the eye to look more rested. You can also try improving blood flow by propping up your head, for example with an extra pillow, this may help fluid to drain more quickly avoiding puffiness around the eye and preventing blood from pooling in the under eyes area. Getting enough sleep is key to helping skin recover and repair itself, so we advise prioritising sleep hygiene for all aspects of skin health. Applying an overnight eye cream as part of your night-time skincare routine can help you wake up to brighter-looking eyes. Try our restorative Midnight Recovery Eye which is suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin.

In addition to getting enough sleep and avoiding eye strain, there are steps you can take to help care for the delicate eye area and improve the appearance of dark circles.

Remove makeup gently

When you remove makeup, use a mild formulation  and carefully wipe away eye makeup without pulling or rubbing. Excessive pulling can even cause hyperpigmentation and make dark circles appear more visible. A makeup-removing cleansing oil like our Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil can help remove mascara and eyeliner. Dispense onto a cotton pad and press on area for 10 seconds before gently wiping outwards and washing off.

Day & night eye cream

Always smooth on a targeted eye care product as part of your daily skincare routine. Use an eye serum or cream (or both) to help improve the look of dark circles. When applying your eye cream, gently tap the formula under the eye and along the orbital bone.
