Dry and flaky skin: dry skin tips on what to avoid

SKINCARE

Wondering how to hydrate dry skin? Whether you have occasional patches of dryness or a constant battle with rough skin on your face, the first step is understanding its causes. Though it’s often associated with the wintry months, dry and flaky skin is a year-round issue for many of us. The best moisturising routine depends on your skin type – visit our consultation page to find out more and then read on for our top tips to keep your skin looking dewy throughout the seasons.

What is dry skin and how to identify it

The best thing for dry skin on your face depends on your skin type. There’s a difference between skin that’s naturally dry and skin that’s simply dehydrated. Dry and flaky skin often is lacking in natural oils. This may be due to a variety of factors like genetics, age, and weather. These natural lipid oils are important because they lock in moisture, keeping skin soft and hydrated.

So, what does dry skin look and feel like? It might be tight to the touch and feel itchy. There may also be redness and visible flakes or peeling. Most cases of dry skin are mild and related to environmental and lifestyle factors. For severe cases, it’s a good idea to visit your dermatologist to rule out conditions like psoriasis, eczema, and others.

Skincare tips to avoid dry skin

Wondering how to get rid of dry skin on your face? The best method is preventing it in the first place. You might be irritating your skin without even realising it, as the causes aren’t always obvious. Here are a few things to avoid if you want to keep your skin feeling its best.

Don’t skip the SPF

You probably already know that UVA and UVB rays can accelerate the ageing process, but did you know they also cause dry flaky skin, roughness, and discolouration? Never leave the SPF out of your daily routine – choose the right sun cream for your skin type. For dry and dehydrated skin, our Ultra Light Daily UV Defence SPF 50 restores moisture while protecting against further damage.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

The best thing for dry skin on your face is good old-fashioned H2O! If you haven’t been drinking enough water, it leaves your skin feeling itchy and tight. Aim for at least two litres of water a day, avoiding diuretics like caffeine and alcohol. Try to cut down on your salt intake too while boosting your diet with hydrating fruits and vegetables and healthy fats.

Avoid hot showers/baths

A long, hot shower feels great at the end of the day, but it can stress out your skin. This is because hot water strips your skin of its natural essential oils. Instead, turn the temperature down and cut your shower time by a few minutes – 5 to 10 minutes should be enough. Remember that water evaporates rapidly, so you’ll want to slather on lotion while your skin is still damp to lock in that restorative moisture.

Go easy on the exfoliants

Exfoliants remove dead skin cells to reveal the smooth, younger skin underneath. Just be sure not to overdo it. For most of us, exfoliating once or twice a week should be plenty. Over-exfoliating damages the skin barrier, which not only invites in allergens and irritants, but it also dries out skin.

Limit excessive sun exposure and winter exposure

One of the best ways to prevent dry and flaky skin is by prepping your skin for the elements. We’ve already mentioned the need for good SPF, but don’t forget about the humidity factor. Low humidity means there’s not very much moisture in the air. Use a humidifier in dry rooms to keep your skin hydrated. When the weather outside is cold and windy, prevent chapped cheeks by bundling up warm and layering on a protective formula like our Ultra Facial Cream for 24-hour hydration.

Avoid heavily fragranced skin care products

We all love a good fragrance, but if you have dry and sensitive skin these can irritate skin. Look for gentle products infused with hydrating ingredients like glycerine and hyaluronic acid instead. Kiehl’s Centella Cleanser is ultra-mild, designed without fragrance to gently remove dirt without stripping away oil.
