What’s the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin?

If you’re not sure if you suffer from dry skin or it’s simply dehydrated, you’re not alone. If you thought they were the same thing, you’re also not alone. While dry skin is a skin type though, dehydrated skin is a condition that can affect everyone and may only be temporary. With two different skincare concerns, we’re going to need two different routines. Read on for both.

Dry skin: The Causes And The Solutions

Although it may sound obvious, dry skin occurs when your skin can’t retain enough water. This can be the result of a number of reasons, from the weather to age or even taking too many hot showers. Dry skin also lacks oil, which can help to make pores less visible on the positive side, but can also cause your skin to feel uncomfortable and itchy.

As dry flaky skin can affect any part of your body, this can mean not only dry skin on the face but dry feet and cracked, dry hands too – especially in the colder months. You may also experience dullness, scaly skin, sensitivity and conditions like eczema.

Adapting both your lifestyle and skincare routine can help to soothe dry itchy skin and lock in much-needed moisture. Starting with your morning routine, keep your showers as short as possible and avoid turning up the temperature.

Once you’re out of the shower or bath, make sure to lather on your moisturiser immediately, too. When looking for a good moisturiser, hydrating formulas are the answer to your dry skin needs. Look for hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and nourishing thicker formulas to help replenish the skin’s natural barrier function.

The Products To Add To Your Routine

Choose a gentle cleanser over a soap that can dry out your skin. Our mildest facial cleanser, Kiehl’s Centella, is suitable even for sensitive skin and gently removes dirt and oil to help strengthen the skin’s barrier when applied in the morning. Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil is a soothing nighttime cleansing oil that turns into a milk when mixed with water and removes impurities and even makeup without over-drying skin.

Humectants, such as skin-replenishing glycerin, can help attract and lock in moisture to hydrate and soften skin. Infused with 15% glycerin, Kiehl’s Hydro-Plumping Serum provides intense hydration to revive dull skin and help to plump and smooth the appearance of fine lines.

Finish your routine with our Ultra Facial Cream to minimise moisture loss and keep skin feeling soft and supple. If your skin is feeling particularly sensitive, apply our chamomile-enriched Skin Rescuer morning and night to gently soothe.

To soothe dry skin all over your body, apply Creme de Corps lotion, especially in the winter months and after a hot shower or bath. Enriched with cocoa butter and squalane, our luxurious body cream helps soften and hydrate your skin. Dry lips are a common side effect of colder temperatures too. For a nourishing overnight treatment and soft, supple lips when you wake, add our coconut oil enriched Buttermask and its formula of coconut oil and wild mango butter to your nighttime routine.

Dehydrated Skin: The Causes And The Solutions

Just as we all sometimes forget to drink our eight glasses of water a day, our skin can also get a little neglected and dehydrated from time to time. While the weather is the most common reason our skin can start to feel tighter and look a little duller, it’s not the only factor that may be causing your dehydrated skin.

Diet, hormones and even your love of coffee can also play a part. Fortunately, a skincare routine rich in hydrating and skin-restoring ingredients can have it back to its happy and healthy best.

Any good moisturiser or serum needs a clean canvas to work on. That’s where your cleanser comes in. Choose a gentle formula that dissolves excess oil and dirt but doesn’t strip the skin of its natural oils. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser, formulated with avocado oil and squalane, helps restore your skin’s natural moisture. For those that do enjoy a cleanser that forms a lather, our gentle foaming Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil Herbal Cleanser also helps to calm and clean skin without stripping it of essential moisture.
