What It Is

Your skin's moisture barrier is essential for keeping skin hydrated and protected from environmental stressors. When cleansing strips this barrier, skin can feel tight, dry, and uncomfortable. A hydrating cream-to-foam facial cleanser removes makeup and sunscreen without stripping the skin barrier.
A hydrating facial cleanser for all skin types — including sensitive and dry skin — that lifts impurities while helping to strengthen the skin's moisture barrier. This cream-to-foam hydrating cleanser transforms into a dense micro-foam with tiny bubbles that cleanse away dirt, makeup, and sunscreen without stripping your skin's moisture barrier — so your face feels clean, comfortable, and never tight. Our dermatologist-tested formula with Amino Acid Surfactant, Glycerin, and Squalane works to gently lift impurities and hydrate the skin barrier to help retain moisture throughout the day.

SQUALANE

A signature Kiehl’s ingredient derived from sugar cane, Squalane absorbs effortlessly to replenish the skin’s barrier, leaving it soft, supple, and deeply moisturised.

GLYCERIN

A powerful, moisture-binding humectant that draws hydration into the skin, helping it retain essential moisture to leave it soft, smooth, and deeply hydrated.

AMINO ACID SURFACTANT

Amino Acid Surfactants, ideal for sensitive skin types, are gentle and mild. Though gentle, this type of ingredient also creates a rich, dense foam that we use to effectively cleanse dirt, makeup and sunscreen while protecting the skin's barrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT DOES A HYDRATING CLEANSER DO?

A hydrating cleanser typically removes dirt, makeup, and sunscreen from your skin while helping to maintain its natural moisture levels. Unlike traditional foaming cleansers that can leave skin feeling tight or dry, a hydrating cleanser like the Ultra Facial Barrier-Hydrating Cleanser uses ingredients such as Glycerin and Squalane to replenish moisture as it cleanses, leaving skin feeling clean, soft, and comfortable.

IS THE ULTRA FACIAL BARRIER-HYDRATING CLEANSER SUITABLE FOR DRY SKIN?

Yes, this hydrating cleanser is suitable for all skin types, including dry skin. Its cream-to-foam formula is specifically designed to cleanse without stripping the skin's moisture barrier, and it delivers up to 24 hours of hydration after cleansing. The combination of Squalane and Glycerin may help dry skin retain moisture throughout the day.

CAN THIS HYDRATING CLEANSER REMOVE MAKEUP AND SUNSCREEN?

Yes, the Ultra Facial Barrier-Hydrating Cleanser effectively removes makeup and sunscreen. The Amino Acid Surfactant in the formula creates a rich, dense micro-foam that helps lift away impurities, makeup, and SPF without the need for harsh stripping agents. For heavy or waterproof makeup, we recommend double cleansing with a cleansing oil first.

IS THIS CLEANSER GENTLE ENOUGH TO USE WITH ACTIVE INGREDIENTS LIKE RETINOL OR AZELAIC ACID?

Yes, this gentle, fragrance-free hydrating cleanser is an excellent choice to pair with active ingredients such as retinol, azelaic acid, or vitamin C. Because it cleanses without disrupting the skin barrier, it may help keep skin calm and hydrated — which is especially important when using potent actives that may increase sensitivity.

WHAT IS THE BEST FACE WASH TO USE ON ACCUTANE?

When using Accutane (isotretinoin), dermatologists typically recommend a gentle, hydrating cleanser that won't further dry or irritate the skin. The Ultra Facial Barrier-Hydrating Cleanser is fragrance-free, soap-free, and non-stripping, making it a suitable option for skin that's experiencing the dryness and sensitivity commonly associated with Accutane treatment. Always consult your dermatologist for personalised advice.

HOW IS THE ULTRA FACIAL BARRIER-HYDRATING CLEANSER DIFFERENT FROM THE ULTRA FACIAL CLEANSER?

The Ultra Facial Barrier-Hydrating Cleanser is specifically formulated to hydrate and protect the skin barrier during cleansing, with a cream-to-foam texture and key ingredients including Amino Acid Surfactant, Glycerin, and Squalane. The original Ultra Facial Cleanser is a mild foaming cleanser for all skin types, formulated with Squalane, Apricot Kernels, and Avocado Oil. If your primary concern is dryness or barrier sensitivity, the Barrier-Hydrating Cleanser may be the better choice. SHOP NOW
